Top 6 Google Chrome Tips

In order to improve your productivity and not get entangled in some of Internet’s various procrastination fields of amusement, here are some Google Chrome tips to help you improve your overall tech knowledge curve.

1. Use keyboard shortcuts

Almost all browsers have keyboard shortcuts, and Google Chrome is not omitted from such claims. For example: pressing CTRL + 9 will switch your current field of view toward the last open tab. CTRL + H will immediately pop-up a History window, and CTRL + (1-8) will move you through the equivalent tab along your open tabs (if applicable). CTRL + K can be used for moving the cursor to the address bar, and CTRL + T will open a new tab. Also, CTRL + SHIFT + T will open the last tab you ‘accidently’ closed, but this doesn’t work in incognito mode. CTRL + W will close the current tab you’re viewing.

2. Conduct calculations with the Omnibox

The Omnibox (or address bar) can transform into a powerful tool in the hands of experienced users. Along with simple URL displaying, the Omnibox is also capable of doing various math calculations, or even answer questions such as ‘Who is Macedonia’s current president’ on the fly. Not pressing ENTER will enable any calculation possible (again, if applicable) in the Omnibox Google Chrome area.

3. Pin your tabs to save precious space

If you’re the guy who’s constantly put off by lacking additional space above the Omnibox, then try pinning your tabs to enable quick access on every page you happen to like. Pinning a tab is easy as RIGHT-CLICK on a preferable tab and choosing the PIN TAB option.

4. Chrome Task Manager can also be used

If you happen to didn’t know, every open tab takes resources separately – being in an individual sandbox to help maintain the browser stability. Because of this, tracking overall system resources can prove as quite a daunting task for one to achieve. In the Windows Task Manager (if using Windows), each tab is presented as a separate Google Chrome instance. Now, to open the Google Chrome Task Manager press SHIFT + ESC, or do the long walk by clicking the ‘wrench’ or ‘menu’ icon (somewhere along the top-right corner) – then TOOLS and finally – TASK MANAGER. Of course, Google being what they are, a geek version of the same is available too – you can find STATS FOR NERDS (you read that right!) at the bottom of the already opened Google Chrome Task Manager.

5. Resize really small text boxes

If a certain text box is not big enough to contain all of your personal information, you can simply click-and-drag the same in order to, well, expand it. To resize a text box, click-and-drag the bottom right area - the part holding two miniature diagonal lines inside. (Nifty, isn’t it?)

6. Install extensions in your free time

In an epoch of apps consumerism, who doesn’t want to install additional software you may sometimes, or may not ever need (hint: me)? Installing extensions can approve or degrade your overall browsing experience – so consider yourself warned about such activities. Anyway, if you still want to add ‘Christmas ornaments’ on your tree that is Google Chrome, visit the Google Chrome Webstore, and don’t tell anyone that you spent your free time doing this.
